What Should Be Included in a Marketing Plan?

A useful marketing plan turns business goals into priorities, audiences, messages, channels, responsibilities and measurable next steps.

By Brittany TrippettConnect + Create Marketing

A marketing plan does not need to be a 50-page document. It needs to be clear enough that the people responsible for execution know what matters, who they are trying to reach and how success will be evaluated.

1. Business goals

Start with the outcome the organization actually needs. More qualified leads, stronger awareness, event attendance, donor growth, recruitment and customer retention all require different tactics.

2. Target audiences

Define who needs to hear from you and what matters to them. Avoid trying to communicate with “everyone.”

3. Positioning and key messages

Clarify what you offer, why it matters and why someone should choose you. This becomes the foundation for website copy, advertising, social media, PR and sales materials.

4. Channel strategy

Choose channels based on the audience and goal, not because every business is supposedly required to be everywhere.

Owned

Website, email, blog and other channels you control.

Earned

PR, media coverage, reviews and third-party mentions.

Paid

Search, social, display, sponsorships and other advertising.

Community

Events, partnerships, outreach and relationship-building.

5. Content and campaign priorities

Map the major campaigns, launches, seasonal needs and evergreen content that support the plan.

6. Budget and resources

Identify what can realistically be funded and who will do the work. A plan that requires more time and expertise than the organization has available will not be sustainable.

7. Responsibilities and timing

Assign ownership, deadlines and approval steps so good ideas do not get stuck between departments or vendors.

8. Measurement

Choose metrics connected to the business goal, such as qualified inquiries, conversions, attendance, leads, revenue influence or search visibility.

A strong marketing plan should help you decide what not to do just as clearly as it tells you what to do.
